The idea for the mechanism in this box came to me months ago. I spent quite some time working out and prototyping the mechanism, which is completely unique. I showed the box to Jerry Slocum at the NYPP and he verified that the mechanics and solution have never been done before. I'm very happy with how this box turned out and I think it is probably the best box I have ever made.
Most of the work on this box is on the inside. Once solved, the mechanism is completely visable, although it cannot be modified or misaligned in any way. I thought about showing pictures of the mechanism but unfortunately it would give away too much. As the materials imply, there are many parts inside the box that were hand machined from solid stock, as well as high precision components purchased fro mindustrial sources. The box is finished with laquer and then hand waxed and buffed to give the paduak a very nice shine with depth which glimmers when you rotate the box. There is a clue engraved in the bottom of the box to help you on your way. Each box is signed. Thanks to George Miller for helping fabricate some of the internals on his laser cutter. This design won a first prize award in the IPP28 Design Competition. |
