COMMENTS: After 5 long months the Stickman No. 5 Puzzle Box is finally here. Hand crafted by artist Robert Yarger, this unique take-apart puzzle box comprises a patchwork of quality maple, walnut, cherry and bloodwood pieces. Some boxes also have a few oak components to them. The box requires a total of 32 moves to get open. Three additional moves will also allow it to come apart into more than 75 individual solid wood pieces. The No. 5 puzzle box does not use any glue. Instead, it is simply held together by the shape of its intricately cut pieces.

A lot of time and detail went into each individual component on this box. Most of its pieces required over 18 separate machine cuts in order to produce, and the exterior side of each piece has been painstakingly beveled to enhance its appearance. The pieces have also been finished using a special lacquering process that takes 24 hours to complete and 36 hours to fully cure, (a process that should prevent warping, swelling or shrinking of any box part for generations to come).

On average, each individual box required over 38 hours of labor and 15 lbs of high-quality wood to produce. In order to achieve the detailed shape of each individual component (from a solid piece of wood - without using any glue) more than 80% of this box had to be sacrificed as sawdust, leaving the final weight at a mere 4lbs. This sounds like an extravagant waste, but it was necessary in order to achieve the overall quality of its pieces.

The No. 5 Puzzle Box is definitely not for the faint of heart. Novice puzzle sleuths should be content to simply figure out the secret to getting it open. Advanced puzzle workers might consider disassembling a single panel at a time, as this will significantly reduce the chance of mixing up confusing reciprocal pieces. For those who consider themselves puzzle experts and decide to take the entire thing apart at once, consider yourself warned and May God Have Mercy On Your Soul. It takes me almost 2 hours to assemble a single box, and I know exactly what I am doing. There will be a $50 charge for any box that has to be returned for reassembly.

The Stickman No. 5 Puzzle Box has been limited in production to 45 finished pieces. Each box comes with its own original 8-page color illustrated instruction booklet.
